A Youth leader's resource guide
Introduction
"Where would Jesus be?" is a youth work resource pack designed by the Church of Ireland Youth Department (CIYD), addressing some of the issues facing young people concerning racism, sectarianism and the ever changing nature of a multi-ethnic Ireland. The resource itself is an outworking of the Church of Ireland's Hard Gospel Project specifically designed to support youth groups in their exploration and understanding of reconciliation issues. "WWJB?" is funded through a grant received from the Youth Council of Northern Ireland.
Rationale
The aim of the "WWJB?" resource pack is to encourage and facilitate young people from a Christian background in their exploration of attitudes and feelings towards people of different race, religion, class, etc. The idea of "Where Would Jesus be?" is based on a continuation of the question asked some time ago in the Christian youth field..."What would Jesus do?"
Methodology
The Where Would Jesus be? resource pack contains nine key images, in postcard format that can be used to stimulate conversation around the issues portrayed. Ideally, these images could be utilised in a group work context, as a discussion starter, or to help participants explore issues around their feelings and thoughts on tricky topics that young people encounter. All of the images on the flipside contain key questions for thought including a Scripture verse; designed to prompt questions and hopefully deeper insight into our thoughts and values, fears and prejudices.
Ideally, young people themselves will add their meaning to the cards, and bring to light their insights, experiences and questions. Your role as a youth leader is to listen and facilitate; allowing young people to develop a deeper understanding of themselves, others and God.
Please note:
Youth Leaders' need to be aware that WWJB? may provoke a strong reaction within group participants or individuals. Leaders' should ensure that the group using the resource pack are encouraged to share openly, mindful of issues arising from inappropriate language, etc. A group contract addressing issues of confidentiality, respect and other concerns is worth agreeing with participants' prior to opening up these important and very needed conversations.
